Residential & Commercial
Sealed units- The ‘sealed unit” is the glass portion of your window, most commonly made of two or three panes of glass separated by a spacer that seals the gap between the glass. This air space is the means of insulating your window, and is what helps keep frost and condensation from forming on the window pane. Sometimes even the highest quality sealed unit wears out under constant expansion and contraction, and moisture seeps in. If you notice fog or moisture in the sealed unit, in between the panes of glass, the window has failed. Sealed units can be ordered as low-E or clear windows.
What is Low-E glass and how do you benefit form them? Low-emissivity glass, commonly called low-E glass, is really the best energy efficient sealed unit you can get. Windows with low-E have a thin, transparent coating of metal and metal oxides that work in tandem with argon gas. They are over twice as energy efficient as regular clear double pane windows, offering energy savings year round, Because it resists the ultraviolet light, the low-E glass reduces fading and damage to carpets, hardwood, draperies, sofas and other furnishings. During the summer, the Low-E reduces the heat gain front he sun while still allowing light to pass through, thus keeping your house cooler. On the other hand, in the winter it reduces heat loss from the inside of your house keeping you house warmer and your heating bills lower. Give us a call to come and measure your windows and provide you with quotes so you can make an informed decision regarding your next sealed unit.
Single Pane Windows
These are generally found in aluminum sliding windows and older wooden frame windows. Because there is no “standard” thickness for glass in these windows, as there really is no “standard” window, it is often best to pop your frame out and bring it in to us to replace. If it is a window that is fixed in place- have us come out and measure it to replace.
Window Screens
We can re-screen or rebuild most window and door screens. We stock fiberglass or metal screen and some screen bar for frames. Check with us to see current color and stock we have for screen bar. We can also special order in some pet and bug screen on request- deposits are required for these. We can also replace the “pulls” and tabs by request on your screens. Give us a call with your sizing to get an approximate quote for rescreens, or we can come and measure at your home if you need full screen replacement.
What Is A Storefront Door or Commercial door?
A storefront door is a type of commercial door that is constructed from aluminum and comprised of a top rail, bottom rail, hinge stile, and lock stile that holds a large tempered glass lite. Storefront doors get their name because they are the front entrance door of choice for any type of commercial building or retail store. The aluminum door construction is very heavy duty and durable, making it great for front entrance doors. Storefront doors also feature a full lite of tempered glass, offering lots of visibility for pedestrians using the door. The reliable door construction and large glass window lite make storefront doors ideal for front entry doors for any building, office, or retail space. Most standard storefront doors use 1/4″ tempered, clear glass. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass commonly used in commercial buildings. When broken, tempered glass breaks into tiny pieces, instead of large shards like annealed glass. Storefront doors can also use 5/8″ insulated tempered, clear glass. Insulated glass is used to help retain the building’s temperature. We can order in tempered door glass or sealed unit replacements, or replace with a laminated door glass in many cases.
Commercial Doors - Offset Pivots vs Hinges
Standard storefront doors use offset pivots as the hinge mechanism for the door. Offset pivots are very durable and use a high quality bearing designed for commercial use. Typically offset pivots are located at the bottom threshold of the door and the top rail of the door. If the door is 8′-0″ tall there will be an additional 3/4″ offset intermediate pivot at the centre of the door. Some storefront doors use ball bearing hinges. Vinyl Windows
The way a window is classified depends on the material that its framing is made out of. The framing material of a window not only makes up the perimeter frame, but the surrounding frames of the operable parts of a window as well. Window framing is typically composed of either wood, aluminum or vinyl. Vinyl is the common name given to a polymer called Poly-Vinyl Chloride. There are many things that contain PVC, but in the case of the window specifically, the polymer (PVC) is blended with additives that allow it to be molded into window frames and also helps to resist sun degradation.
